The Case for a Sports MBA

The sports industry has become genuinely complex. Its leaders need to match that.

A decade ago, sports management in India was largely administrative. Today it involves media-rights deals worth hundreds of crores, franchise valuations, streaming negotiations, athlete brand management and international federation partnerships.

General MBA programmes teach business. They do not teach you how to structure a broadcast deal with a streaming platform, how to value a player's commercial rights, or how to build a sponsorship portfolio for a cricket franchise. You learn that in the industry the hard way — or you train specifically for it.

The MBA in Sports Management at ISST has an 18-year track record, visible in an alumni network of COOs, marketing directors, franchise heads and federation executives now among the most senior professionals in Indian sport.

The Honest Comparison

A general MBA vs. a sports MBA

A general MBA typically gives you

  • Business theory across sectors — only some of which you will work in
  • A peer network across industries, not the sports industry specifically
  • Case studies from FMCG, consulting and banking, not sports franchises
  • A degree sports employers see often and are not especially excited by
  • No practical exposure to sports organisations during the programme

The ISST MBA in Sports Management gives you

  • A curriculum built entirely around franchising, media, sponsorship, events and governance
  • Direct access to 12,000+ alumni in senior roles across Indian and international sport
  • Live projects with professional sports organisations — real problems, real stakes
  • A degree hiring managers at sports organisations recognise and recruit from
  • A guaranteed internship inside the sports ecosystem, not a generic corporate placement

Frequently asked questions

The questions the admissions desk answers most often.

What is the eligibility for the MBA in Sports Management?

A bachelor's degree in any stream. There is no entrance exam and no requirement to have played competitive sport.

How is this different from a general MBA with a sports elective?

Every subject is taught in a sports context by a practitioner from professional sport, the projects are live briefs from real sports organisations, and the guaranteed internship is inside the sports ecosystem rather than a generic corporate placement.

Is the degree UGC-approved?

Yes. The MBA is awarded by Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, a UGC-recognised university, and additionally carries ISPA international accreditation from Chicago, USA.

Should I do the 2-year MBA or the 1-year PG Diploma?

The MBA suits people targeting senior leadership roles over a 5–10 year horizon. The PG Diploma is the faster route into a first industry job. An advisor will give you an honest recommendation on the call.

Is the internship really guaranteed?

Yes — a six-month supervised placement inside a partner sports organisation, at no additional charge. Every ISST student has been placed for 18 years running.

How do I get the fee structure?

Send the enquiry form and an advisor calls back with the full fee structure, instalment options and intake dates, usually the same working day.
